Going forward


With the current COVID-19 situation, a lot of teachers are practically forced to move to online/remote teaching whether they are novice to technology or tech savvy. Therefore,, a lot of organizations, companies and individuals are pushing webinars and workshops trainings to help educators get accustomed to their new teaching environment. While I do understand the effort and the support, going forward it is important to think about the following questions:

  • What is technology integration?
  • What is the difference between “Using Technology” and “Integrating Technology”?

As we know, it was never been about the tools but the pedagogy used to achieve the learning objectives. That’s why it is imperative to think forward and to come up with ideas on how to help educators, not only to use the tools, but also to integrate them during their synchronous and asynchronous teaching in order to develop deeper learning. Feel free to share your thoughts.

This is the second week in our journey to Fast Track Remote Learning experience. It would take me a year to really digest the amount of resources that I received last week and they’re still coming. As many pointed out and I hope my fellow educators are paying attention, it’s not about the tools. At the end of the day, we should start asking ourselves what are our goals, what do we want our students to know and how will we know they learn it. Therefore, we should start thinking about the following:

  1. How do we hold students accountable for their work?
  2. How do we assess students’ work while taking into account all the unknowns that surround them?

The beginning

I’ve always wanted to start a blog but never had the time to get started. Being home, for I don’t really know how long, and teaching fully online, I decided that it is about time to let my thoughts flow freely. I’ve been thinking a lot about the urgency that the COVID-19 has put on educators, especially the K-12 teachers, to move from face-to-face teaching to online teaching. For some teachers, this has been like a wake-up call and there is a need to really ponder on the topic.

Online Teaching – Remote Learning

This week has been stressful for a lot of educators, not because they were anxious about being infected by the covid-19, but because they were asked to transform their face-to-face classroom into online learning. Thinking about it, as the world number one country, this should not be a big deal due to the fact that we’ve been talking about 21st Century Learning for a long time. However, speaking about it and implementing it is two different things. Now, we have been put the test, let’s see how we’re going to do. The important question though is: What is online teaching, remote learning? Is posting handouts online and asking students to complete them and grade them online teaching? What about Technology Integration? What does that mean? Really? A lot of tech companies keep sending those links and offers for free accounts during this time of turmoil. That’s very helpful. Nevertheless, is that what teachers really need to provide students with the skills they need to compete in this global world? What about the 4 C’s of 21st Century Skills?
